*High Achieving High School Students*
 A 60-hour summer Spinal Cord Injury/Rehabilitation and Long Term Care
Program consisting of lectures and clinical experiences working with
patients will be offered at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital.  The
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Nursing Home Care Unit (NHCU), and rehabilitation
units will be the primary areas in which the Junior Interns will be
assigned.
A total of 15 high school students will be accepted from the community.  An
emphasis will be placed on those students who are seeking a career in
nursing, medicine, social work, pharmacy or physical and occupational
therapy.
The experience will consist of:

    - Lectures-SCI, geriatrics and rehabilitation
       - Shadowing a provider--Nurse, Physician, Therapist, Social
      Worker, or others
       - Attending interdisciplinary team rounds and /or discharge
      planning conferences
       - Direct patient contact

 ***Program Goals for Junior Intern Program*
 The overall goal of the Junior Intern Program is to provide interns:

    - Exposure to the rehabilitation process and to the rewarding
      experience of interaction with veterans
       - Education regarding physical, spiritual, emotional, and
      psychological changes associated with aging, spinal cord/traumatic brain
      injury, and healing
       - Encouragement to develop a sense of understanding and
      patience with aspects of the rehabilitation process
       - Hands on experience which will inspire interest in pursuing a
      health-related career in the care of SCI, geriatrics, and rehabilitation.

 ***Procedure*
 The James A. Haley Nursing, Voluntary, and Medical Education departments in
collaboration with community high-school career specialists will announce
the Junior Intern Program outlining the purpose, goals and eligibility
criteria.
***Eligibility Criteria*

    - Letter of interest*
       - Rising high-school student; Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or
      Senior
       - Not on academic or disciplinary probation
       - Reliable school attendance and punctuality record
       - Two (2) letters of recommendations from community sources,
      teachers, supervisors (not VA employees, parents, or neighbors)*
       - Parental approval
       - Ability to complete 60 hours
       - Prior voluntary experience is preferred
       - Must be able to attend ALL didactic/orientation sessions
       - Evaluation of the Junior Intern will be conducted at the end
      of the program.  The evaluation will include direct observation,
attitude,
      and behavior.  This evaluation will be shared with the individual's high
      school guidance counselor.

 Letter of interest must be typed & include:

    - Specific health career pursuit/personal goals such as nursing,
      medicine, pharmacy, occupational/physical therapy, etc.
       - Why you wish to become a Junior Intern
       - What you can provide to the veteran
       - Letter must be 300-500 words, font size 12, double-spaced,
      using Times New Roman font style

    ***Selection Process*
          - Applications will be judged by three reviewers from
      Nursing and Medical Education Departments and Voluntary Service.
       - Applicants will be notified by phone or email* by May 12th,
      2008

 ***Mentors*
Mentorship is very important to the Junior Intern Program. Mentors provide
guidance and direction to interns as they interact with hospital personnel,
patients and families. Because of the leadership skills that mentoring
requires, only a select few of the applicants will be considered for this
role. The leadership experience will support the student's college and/or
other academic or personal pursuits.  Five (5) mentors will be chosen to
guide the junior interns through their experience. Additional
responsibilities for mentors will be to meet with their assigned students
each week, keep a journal for review with the program directors, and work
with other personnel in developing learning opportunities for the Junior
Interns.
Mentors will also provide direction for entertainment activities such as a
talent show. Mentors will receive additional credit towards volunteer hours
for overseeing and coordinating the Junior Intern experiences.

***Eligibility Criteria for Mentors*

    - Letter of interest
       - Rising senior or graduate with prior voluntary experience at
      the VA
       - Not on academic or disciplinary probation
       - Reliable school attendance and punctuality record
       - One (1) letter of recommendation from VA supervisor or unit
      Manager*
       - Parental approval
       - Ability to complete 60 hours
       - Must be able to attend ALL didactic/orientation session
       - Evaluation of the Mentor will be conducted at the end of the
      program.  The evaluation will include direct observation, attitude, and
      behavior.  This evaluation will be shared with the individual's
high school
      guidance counselor.

Letter of interest must be typed & include:

    - Why you wish to become a Junior Intern Program Mentor
       - What you can provide to the new intern
       - Letter must be 300-500 words, double-spaced, size 12- Times
      New Roman font
      *Classes will be held on campus at the James A. Haley VAMC*
      *13000 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. Tampa FL 33612*
       *Dates: June 9,10,11,12,13, from 12-4pm* Interns are required
            to attend all classes. *
            *Training rooms will be announced.*
      *Graduation will be in the Hospital Auditorium on *
        *Friday July 25**th**, 2008*
                  *11:30am-1:30pm*
                  *Families are encouraged to attend
      graduation*

 The ending of the program will be celebrated to provide closure and to
recognize the contributions of all the interns and the Veteran patients. The
Junior Interns will be presented with a certificate signifying their
participation in the Internship Program.
