    TAMPA - University of South Florida police issued an e-mail alert to all students this week, advising them to be cautious in light of a serial rapist linked to six sexual attacks about two miles west of the campus.
   
  
  DNA evidence has linked five rapes and one attempted rape between 2003 and June 14 to the same man, Tampa police and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Authorities suspect the man also was involved in an Aug. 19 rape but are awaiting results of a DNA test.
   
  
  The attacks occurred east of Nebraska Avenue between Bearss Avenue and 93rd Avenue. The area involved stretches to Bruce B. Downs Boulevard north of Fowler Avenue and to North 15th Street south of Fowler Avenue.
   
  
  Although none occurred on the University of South Florida, university police thought it good to advise people to take precautions given the close proximity, Lt. Meg Ross said.
  
  The alert advises people not to walk alone at night and to tell someone where you are going and when you will return. It also says to lock all doors and not prop open the exterior doors of buildings.
