[Genealib] Genealogy periodical usage

The general genealogy and history periodicals to which we currently
subscribe are not used much by the public, but a few staff members read
them to keep up with new Web sites, etc.,--and unfortunately, all too
often to identify and respond to inaccurate and misleading information
printed about West Virginia records, resources, the Archives
specifically, etc. If we have to make cuts, they will probably not be
renewed.

The surname and society newsletters are used often enough to justify
keeping them. Some of them are cataloged, and all of them are listed in
our online periodicals database (not part of the library catalog).

I can't get anyone to use our regular online library catalog much, so
cataloging them wouldn't make a significant difference. I think they
would be browsed more if they were in a more visible location, but we do
not have floor space for any type of periodicals rack. They are in
upright plastic holders in an obscure corner of the stacks.

I agree with the comments regarding the types of researchers we are
seeing today.

Subject: [Genealib] Genealogy periodical usage

Hi, All:

Has anyone done a survey on how much their genealogy periodicals are
used? Does cataloging them increase their chances of being used more?
Ours are not cataloged and appear on our web site on a separate page.

Besides these questions, I welcome any and all comments regarding such
usage.

Thanks,
