I'm very excited to share with this list some news about my latest project.
It's taken me over two years to develop, and it's still evolving as I work
with new partners to include their information. Here's the news (and some
background information for anyone who hasn't heard about the project):
The Live Roots catalog now has over 200,000 resources for genealogists, of
which over 70% are FREE! In addition, using Live Roots you can preview
results for all the major database sites (without having a subscription),
and search a variety of online services for books, including the Family
History Library Catalog. The website is http://www.liveroots.com/
Live Roots was launched in October of 2008, and grows every day with newly
published resources and existing items that I discover. If you would like to
know more about the project, feel free to download this PDF file:
http://www.liveroots.com/about/Introducing-the-Live-Roots-Project.pdf (lists
the major collections and real-time search partners currently included)
If you've never heard of Live Roots before, it's essentially a search engine
that understands genealogy. It's not limited to websites; it includes books,
microfilm, photos, postcards, articles, cemeteries, blogs and many other
resource types, all identified with small graphical icons. While Live Roots
is a free service, it does include links to subscription sites and
booksellers, but all of these links are clearly identified with a ($) after
them.
What makes Live Roots unique is that when you find a resource of interest,
it will show you additional locations where that same resource exists --
often for free. Or it may show you where an actual copy of a book in a
subscription database may be purchased so you can add it to you personal
library.
Last month, a complete version of the Live Roots project was released as a
FaceBook application. If you're a Facebook member, and want to access all of
the features of Live Roots and then be able to share any discoveries with
your friends and family, go to: http://apps.facebook.com/liveroots/
There are many other collections and real-time searches under development,
some of which will be available in the next few weeks. There is an update
blog on the site, so you can keep track of all the significant changes and
additions.
Your feedback and suggestions are welcomed (and greatly appreciated). Many
of the enhancements to the website since the launch have been a result of
visitor input.
