I don't think I have seen this answer, so let me try with what I believe it
is.
Post roads are long transportation pathways between major cities that have
post offices. The form of transportation of the mail was either by horse or
carriage. Distances between places required the creation of way stations or
depots where horse were exchanged, riders switched, blacksmith services
provided and nights were spent. So they consisted of a stable and an inn or
tavern in just the right place to be efficient for manpower and horses.
Villages grew up around these services and were known as post villages.
I just made all that up.
