watershed of 1862 through period photos of the people involved, both 
Dakota Indians and white settlers. Curtis Dahlin collected photos and 
scoured repositories and personal holdings of other collectors for the 
hundreds of photos reproduced here, all together for the first time.

Biographies of the photographers includes those who were eyewitnesses 
with their equipment and those responsible for the portraits back in St. 
Paul.
