[Genealib] Hispanic genealogy

I have seen many projects lately that have funded the actual digitization of the records and then asked for volunteers to index them manually. (Ancestry has some freebies they are doing this with as well as the LDS site.) Maybe the German-American records would be a good project for something like this if you could find an organization willing to take it on.

I would also love to see historic German-American newspapers digitized. One problem - I'm not sure it is insurmountable but it is a major problem - is getting any OCR software to recognize the German characters in the Fraktur (old German) typeface that the old German newspapers used. I'd like to hear of any projects that have been successful on a large scale in digitizing the old German type.

Mr. Kemp,
It is great that GenealogyBank has a collection of Historic Hispanic American Newspapers. As a new member I would like to see a collection of historic German American Newspapers as well.

GenealogyBank has the only collection of historical Hispanic American Newspapers online.
Well over 300 titles - newspapers dating from 1808-1980. Newspapers are from across the country.
They are packed with obits; birth/marriage notices; articles of all kinds.
See: www.GenealogyBank.com <http://www.genealogybank.com/>
These are by individual memberships.
Libraries can also get the Hispanic American Newspapers directly from NewsBank.

Does anyone have suggestions for specific titles dealing with basic
Hispanic genealogy (especially South and Central American)? I'm trying
to beef-up both our genealogy and foreign language collections, and
would love titles in both English and Spanish.
Thank you!
