Microfilm is still the archival gold standard for long-term archival
preservation (as in hundreds of years). It is now possible to film
digitally and output to BOTH microfilm (for long term preservation)
and digital files (for easier access). This is the direction the
National Archives and Records Administration is taking (that includes
projects being filmed on-site by FHL).
