I think this was talked about before, but do most of you just print out the family histories you receive electronically? We do have a computer reserved for genealogy use and have put some Access databases of Indexes that the state (KY) had done. When ordering individual family histories that have been published, I have found some that are just "reprinting" by distributing cds only. This concerns me as I am worried about obselete file types, but also don't know if it practical to print out a 200 page book. Other concerns are whether or not to make the cd a circulating item (though none of the other genealogy materials are) or if I should just load it on the one computer.

We see quite a variety of files (cemetery listings in Microsoft Works,
etc.) so in self-defense I have to keep on top of the available
converters.
For Microsoft Office back to 2000 (which I believe will allow Word to
open WordPerfect files as well as providing compatibility with newer
versions of Office) there is the Office Compatibility Pack:
<http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx>
and there is another one at
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en>
For Works files you'll want:
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=BF41401E-70FA-465D-AE2E-CF44DBF05297&displaylang=en>
(For some reason this is not included in the other converters.)
