Claire and others, thank you for sending us the link to contact the Gov of Michigan. I also sent a message stating how this would be a horrible decision to make these cuts. I live and work in Ohio and we are experiencing similar large cuts in many areas. Ohio Libraries were to experience a 30% cut (and that is NOT a typo) but with public awareness and support with phone calls, emails and faxes we "only" experienced a 10% cut. This was on top of a 20% cut we were already expecting. This made us receive a 30% but not as bad as what could have been a 50% cut! Just knowing how the public awareness and support helped our legislators and state Governor realize the importance of public libraries may help others see how they may be able to help Michigan!
My two cents worth.

Awful, just terrible. The executive order does not become effective until Oct. 1. Perhaps the people of Michigan can raise enough fuss to get it rescinded. The rest of us can help.

I suggest we all (even those who don't live in Michigan) to contact the Governor. I just used the online email message system at

On July 13, 2009, the Governor of Michigan issued Executive Order 2009-36 abolishing the Department of History, Arts, and Libraries. The State Records Management Program is being transferred to the Department of Management and Budget. The State Archives is being transferred to the Department of Natural Resources.

A message from the Governor about the reorganization is available at
