I don't know if this helps but according to my genealogy dictionaries the word Ab is Latin for "from" so maybe it refers to the son or daughter being from (father's name). This is all I could find.

  Subject: [Genealib] Census Relationship

  Hello, everyone,

I have been wondering about and unsuccessfully searching for a while for a census abbreviation I do not recognize. I have checked census enumerator instructions, various books, and several websites with no result, so I am posting my question here in the hope (and expectation) that some of you will know.

I am looking for the meaning of the abbreviation "ab" or "AB." In the records I have seen, the term usually precedes or follows the relationship of son or daughter. At first I thought that this could mean that the child was adopted, but can someone tell me definitively what it means? Thanks in advance for all of your help!
