[Genealib] Census Relationship

Hello, everyone,

 

I have been wondering about and unsuccessfully searching for a while for a
census abbreviation I do not recognize. I have checked census enumerator
instructions, various books, and several websites with no result, so I am
posting my question here in the hope (and expectation) that some of you will
know.

 

I am looking for the meaning of the abbreviation "ab" or "AB." In the
records I have seen, the term usually precedes or follows the relationship
of son or daughter. At first I thought that this could mean that the child
was adopted, but can someone tell me definitively what it means? Thanks in
