The Heritage Room at the Commerce Public Library is partially operated and
maintained by the Jackson County Historical Society. The Society owns most,
if not all, of the volumes. We accept family histories both published and
unpublished and they are displayed in alphabetical order on the shelves. We
also have what we refer to as "Family Files" which are file folders stored
in boxes alphabetically by family surname. These files are used by a great
many people. Some of the material may be from our collection, but most is
from published sources we do not have. Both kinds of family research are
frequently used and we are glad to have them. When we receive something
large and unorganized, we put it aside until a volunteer has time to
organize it. Sometimes that never happens. We have, for instance, a number
of old photographs in great condition, but no one knows who the people were.
I guess it would be difficult if this happened frequently in massive
collections, but we are glad to accept whatever is donated.
