"September 1, 1954 The Social Security Act was amended to extend old-age and
survivors insurance coverage to self-employed farmers, self-employed members
of specified professions, additional farm and domestic employees . . ."

In short, not everyone was covered in the 1930s. Worth a try, but not
definitive.

If this gentleman entered as a young man he was probably emplioyed in the
1930s. would not he have had to obtain a social security card?

Perhaps he didn't stay in the United States. I could find a World War I
draft registration (1917-1918 ( for him in the US. I did find a ship's
passenger list for the Empress of Britain's 15 Aug 1914 arrival in
Liverpool, England that included an Alfred Foxford, a 32 year old
blacksmith. The ship sailed from Quebec, Canada. Also sailing with Alfred
were: Nellie Foxford, housewife, and two children, Amelia, 10, and Florence,
3.

This same family, now larger, is found on another ship's list returning to
Canada in 1919 (*1):

Name:Alfred John Foxford
Gender:Male
Age:37
Estimated Birth Year:abt 1882
Date of Arrival:24 Aug 1919
Vessel:Carmania

Port of Arrival:Halifax, Nova Scotia
Port of Departure:Liverpool, England
Roll:T-14797

The above Alfred John Foxford appears to have died during World War I (*2):

Name:Alfred John Foxford
Birth Place:Ilfracombe, Devon
Residence:Bristol
Death Date:13 Apr 1916
Enlistment Location:Bristol
Rank:Private
Regiment:Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regiment)
Battalion:5th Battalion.
Number:20129
Type of Casualty:Died of wounds
Theater of War:British Expeditionary Force
Comments:Formerly 86641, Royal Field Artillery.

I saw in the 1912 US Border Crossing from Canada that the 29 year old
machinest Alfred Foxford's destination was San Francisco, California.
Coincidently he was traveling with another 29 year old Australian, who also
last resided in Vancouver and who was also headed for San Francisco, Lena
Greer and her 9 year old daughter, Constance I Greer.

I can send you copies in another e-mail if there's a chance that this may be
the Alfred Henry Foxford that you are seeking. Perhaps, if my schedule
permits, I can visit the local Family History Center sometime next week and
search the pre 1940 California Death Index for him.

Hi there,

Our library is situated just north of Brisbane in Queensland Australia. We
don't get much call for American research and as a result my expertise in
this area is limited.

We have a client who is looking for an Alfred Henry FOXFORD, born 1880 in
Queensland Australia. Alfred left for America about 1912. I have his entry
from Canada into the USA in 1912 but can find nothing after that. Family
legend has it that he wrote to his mother from 'the Rockies' and then she
never heard from him again and assumed he was dead. Alfred's mother died in
1923. Any clues as to where I could possibly find a death for Alfred?

I have checked through census records and have found a FOXFORD family but
they appear to have originated in Scandanavia. Any help would be
appreciated.

Regards,

Pat Gee
