If you're looking for a large-format scanner, I can personally
recommend the Epson Expression 1640XL. It was superseded by the
10000XL some years back, but you will see them on eBay from time to
time and ours was worth every penny we paid for it.

I've recently been looking for a smaller high-quality scanner and as
Pam said the V750-M (currently $679 from Amazon) appears to be quite
popular.
