I just read "The Blood Detective" by Dan Waddell, a mystery whose amateur detective, Nigel Barnes, is a genealogist working to catch a serial killer with roots in the past.  Penguin Books, 2008
I especially liked the parts where the police arranged special archival access for him - quick delivery of certificate info and access to Colindale - the British Library's newspaper collection - at ANY time!
