[Genealib] Genealogical periodical usage

Our organization is the friends group for the State Archives and one of our projects for many years has been the periodicals section. We collect and bind them. I find that the Louisiana periodicals are very well used. I can tell because I have to keep straightening them up. The out-of-state ones are not as well used, but some of the Canadian ones are because of our state's close ties with Canada. To make space, we recently pulled periodicals for many states, particularly those to the west of us. I was hoping that they would allow us to exchange or sell them and use the funds to buy more books. But they would not because of fear of breaking some state law. I don't know what they did with them.

  Subject: [Genealib] Genealogical periodical usage

  Happy New Year, Listmembers:

I'm interested in knowing how much your bound and electronic genealogical periodicals are being used. I've been a cheerleader for such use for years, and have even presented an extensive, intense program on their value and location, plus availability of indexes, many of which are web-based. For all this, our usage is very low. How much does collection size play a part on usage? Does the presence or lack of an index make a difference?

I realize I can't make patrons use these items <g>, and there are no guarantees that the information they want is in them, but they could be missing out on something significant if they don't even take a look.

I can post a summary if there's interest in one.

  Thanks,
