In reply to Mr. Arnold, and for the general information to others on the
list who may have interested patrons:
West Virginia Archives and History News is a free monthly newsletter of
the Archives and History section of the West Virginia Division of
Culture and History. The Archives and History section includes both the
Archives and History Library and the State Archives, with all of their
overlapping responsibilities and services. The February 2009 issue
completes 9 years of publication.
Most people read the newsletter on our Web site,
http://www.wvculture.org/history/ahnews/ahnews.html, where it is posted
every month as soon as it is published. The February 2009 issue was
posted this morning. All back issues are available, as well as
rudimentary subject and title indexes. Archives and History News is
also included in PERSI.
Paper copies are mailed to all historical, genealogical and preservation
societies on our mailing list, as posted on our Web site at
http://www.wvculture.org/history/histsocs.html, which includes the West
Virginia Chapter of Palatines to America. We encourage each
organization to make their paper copy available to their members in any
way they see fit. Some photocopy and distribute them to members at
meetings, others make it available at meetings and others keep them in
the organization's library or reference shelf. Paper copies are
available to visitors at to the Archives and History Library. We
recently began mailing copies to the other 49 state archives (or
designated alternative). Paper copies are also distributed to all West
Virginia state document repository libraries (West Virginia Library
Commission Library, WV colleges and some WV public libraries) and the
Library of Congress. Unfortunately, we do not have the funds to mail
paper copies to individuals, nor do we have the capability at this time
of sending e-mail copies or notices.
Feel free to e-mail or call me directly if you have any questions.

Hi,
I haven't heard about the website you refer to, but can you tell
me where or how I can subscribe to the West Virginia Archives and
History News?
I have been doing genealogy research for myself for about 33
years, and I am currently Vice President and Program Chairman for the
West Virginia Chapter, Palatines to America (a genealogical society for
people seeking German-speaking ancestors). Also, my wife, Susan, is
currently State Treasurer for the D.A.R.

Does anyone know anything about the Web site
Familyhistory101.com, copyrighted by Genealogy, Inc.? Someone who sent
a research request referred to a Web site called
mywestvirginiagenealogy.com, so I took a look at it. The site is an
offshoot of Familyhistory101.com. I was not happy to find that their
"Burned courthouses" section consisted in large part of my research and
often my exact words from three articles in West Virginia Archives and
History News.
The West Virginia site also has a major flaw in that it
states that for pre-1863 records researchers must go to Virginia
sources, which is incorrect, since the counties all retained their own
records from inception as Virginia counties on throught West Virginia
statehood. Accompanying the incorrect statement is a link to the site's
Virginia pages--which have nothing about the counties that became West
Virginia.
