[Genealib] FW: TB sanitorium

Hi!

In my experience, TB sanitariums were often run by individual counties or communities. We have found references in the city council proceedings as well as the county board proceedings. In some instances, the governing bodies created committees to monitor the sanitariums. Each committee had to file a report with the governing board and in some instances, the reports would name new patients.

We have also seen similar records in the town Board of Health records. The minutes for the community board of health often list which households are under quarantine and for what reason.

Finally, we have a whole series of TB records that originally were created by the county court (register in probate?).

The trick will be ferreting out these records at the county and community level. It is easiest to start with the Mower County records to see if they have something that would document the woman being transferred to Fergus Falls. The county boards usually kept files on something called non-resident relief. This means that Mower County would be charged for her care even though she was now in northern Minnesota.

When asking for help, it is often most successful if the researcher asks for help by document type. Unless the government official has used the records for this purpose before, they might be inclined to say they don't have anything when they are first approached.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Subject: [Genealib] TB sanitorium

One of my patrons was told her grandmother contracted TB and was sent to a sanitarium. She lived in Austin, MN and the sanitarium was in Fergus Falls, MN. The best she can do on the date is probably the 1920s. Can anyone give any advice on how she might confirm this information? What records might still exist and where they might be?
