I have been working at the Atlanta History Center for the past ten years. In that time we have always charged a fee for research and look-ups. It has been our position that this is a service that researchers ought to pay for. We are free and open to the public if they choose to come and conduct their own research.

Our current rates are $50 per hour that can be broken down into quarterly increments for simple look-ups. We do not have a minimum charge but we do require payment in advance. We estimate the length of time the research will take and quote a fee. Depending on the number of photocopies, these are usually wrapped up in the research fees.

We normally charge 35 cents a page for photocopies.

In the recent economic troubles it seems that fewer researchers will pay the fees. A bit of our research income seems to have fallen off. But our income for copies has increased.

Because we are a research center we generally do not participate in ILL.

I hope this information helps out, for whatever it is worth.

Although I asked this last year, in these changing times, I would like to know once again if anyone is charging for research in their “public library.” Research can be defined as look-ups, obituaries, making photocopies and looking for names from books, etc. I would especially like to hear from Florida libraries, but will accept everyone’s response.

Please tell me the fees, time willing to spend, and how many photocopies you provide.

Are you charging for interlibrary loans?

Did you recently make the decision to charge due to the economic downturn?

    Thanks.

    Pam
