I agree with Larry in regard to the treatment of John Doe's in an obit 
notation. This is how we handle them in our newspaper obituaries.

The name of the newspaper,  feel, should be the one that is was printed 
under e.g. Burlington Gazette when it was that, Gazette of Burlington when 
it was that etc. It was published under what it was when the article 
appeared, and a future researcher would look in vain for the paper under 
it's variant names. You are familiar with it, but someone from the other end 
of the nation is not.

Also, unknowns could be indexed as either unknown male or unknown female, 
and not under John or Jane Doe. That wasn't their name, and there are plenty 
of cemetery records with listings (sadly) for Unknown. Because they are!
