Maybe it is an abbreviation for "hired"? And the N is an R?

Subject: [Genealib] Census Question
We are working on an 1880 census record from Prairie County Arkansas that lists "Hind" as the relationship for one gentleman to head of household. They are listed as boat builders, so we thought maybe he spent most of his time on the back end, but that doesn't make sense to be in the relationship field. Also thought it might actually be "Hand", but it is clearly an i, not an a.
Any suggestions? It is Kenneth Thompson, living in the Steve Claycomb residence.
