Researchers who send genealogy "query" letters to libraries would probably appreciate having their contact infomration out there so they might receive help with their research. I know I would.

I am curious what others do with the genealogy request letters they receive,
especially pertaining to the mailing address.
Do you include the letters in existing family files? If so what do you do
about the address, do you mark it out or do you put the letter in the family
file with the address still visible?
Does anyone have a statement about this subject in their request form or
responce letter?
Thank you

Hi,
We do have a family file collection in our New Jersey Room that
contains letters collected by a local genealogist that support his
research for his family history books. There are two sets of these
letters, all copies of the original collection, in our county. We have
add general information, copies, etc., to these files, but not our
research letters.
All of our research letters in a separate file in the reference office,
because of privacy concerns. We have them back to 1999. Each reply
letter that we send out generally contains a list of resources used, so
comes in handy for similar research projects. As far as connecting
"cousins," there has been a couple of occasions that I felt it
appropriate, to "connect" two researchers who were working on the same
exact line. Basically, I asked permission of both beforehand and then
emailed them both an introduction.

Sorry for this, but let me clarify that the local genealogist has been
deceased for many years and his entire collection of research, including
the letters mentioned below, is on deposit for use by the public at a
historical society in Philadelphia.

I have no idea what a professional librarian would do with their specific vertical files. (my only claim is as a
previous church librarian years ago; no degree)
From a researcher's standpoint I'd like it filed the way it came in.... address and all.
The person asking for information wants someone to contact them ... if the name and address has been
blacked out, then how ???
Those doing genealogical research are normally not too worried about an address -
Years later when the address is no longer any good, it can still be that all-important clue to a locality where
family was located at a particular time.
I may have misunderstood your question. ...

We have a large vertical file of family history information which was here
when I was hired in. I included query letters, which I was horrified to
discover had all the identifying information left on them. (My predecessor
saw nothing unusual in this.) We also had a card file, made from our door
register, which gave people's names and phone numbers for all the world to
see.
We have since closed the card file. Our files are still the same as they
were. I am considering digitizing them and, if that is done, will block out
identifying information.

I'm with your predecessor....If our ancestors hadn't left a trail many of us
would be out of a job, because there would be nothing to find. Every
genealogy book in our collections has identifying information. The register
cards are no different than a phone book or city directory.
