[Genealib] Re: DAR and other lineage society

I have been following this discussion and want to clarify a few things.  It is not true that you can't link to an approved application for DAR and other lineage societies.  The problem is that many of the applications approved prior to about 1985 or later contained no documentation.  The application was approved on a notorized statement from the applicatant that all the data was correct.  Many of these older applications contained incorrect information and that is the reason for the requirement now that older applications must be redocumented if you wish to link to them.

If it is a well documented application, there is no problem linking to it and then not needing to provide the documentation that is already on file with the organization.

C.A.R. and DAR (notice forrect placement of periods!) have similar requirements.  I can't speak for SAR but if the documents are provided copies could be obtained.  I don't think DAR will allow linking to a SAR application.

My concern would be that you have no link to the SS-5 letter that could
bring additional information for a difficult research subject.

There is only ONE complete, up-to-date SSDI site online &
GenealogyBank just made it free to everyone.

It is the best SSDI site on the planet.
Period.

Search it at: http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/ssdi.html

Book mark it; link to it; use it.
It's all yours.

It is the ONLY SSDI site updated weekly.

GenealogyBank is celebrating two birthdays - Ida May Fuller's 134th
birthday - she was born 6 Sep 1874 and died at age 100 in 1975. She
was America's first Social Security recipient. ..... And we are also
getting a head start on GenealogyBank's birthday - on Oct 18th we will
celebrate our 2nd Anniversary.

So - to celebrate GenealogyBank has made - the best SSDI site on the
planet - free to all researchers.

Read all about it at:

There are a number of societies that focus on research in the U.K. Some
may organize trips.

Here's a list of some societies from Cyndi's List (not all are
U.S.-based) - http://www.cyndislist.com/genuk.htm#Societies

The three most prominent U.S.-based societies IMHO are:
ISBGFH - Int'l Soc for British Gen & Fam Hist - http://www.isbgfh.org/
BIGWILL - British Interest Grp of WI and IL -
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wiilbig/
BIFHSUSA - British Isles Family Hist Soc - U.S.A. -
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bifhsusa/

Paul Milner is a regular speaker on U.K. research at large (and small)
U.S. conferences.

Dear all,

I wonder if anyone could help me. I am currently undertaking doctoral
research into the history of genealogical research at Glasgow
University. I am particularly interested in the history of American
genealogical research and its links with British archives.

Can anyone recommend any sources where I can find out more about:

a) the history of American genealogical research in general

b) the history of Goodspeed publishing company

c) any Americans that have particularly contributed to British
genealogical research

I would also be interested if anyone regularly directs patrons to
British archives and/or if anyone knows of any local groups that
organize trips to visit British archives

I would be grateful if you could reply off list to:

Feel free to refer anyone interested in joining either the DAR or SAR to the following free online tutorial.  It provides a step-by-step procedure for finding a Revolutionary War patriot ancestor and documenting the lineage to that ancestor.

This is the Social Security Administration's explanation of what
records are in the SSDI. (From http://www.ssa.gov/history/hfaq.html)

"The Death Index contains a listing of persons who had a Social Security number, who are deceased, and whose death was reported to the Social Security Administration. (The information in the Death Index for people who died prior to 1962 is sketchy since SSA's death information was not automated before that date. Death information for persons who died before 1962 is generally only in the Death Index if the death was actually reported to SSA after 1962, even though the death occurred prior to that year.)"

Hi:

Actually DAR and SAR requirements are NOT THE SAME.? Often time in SAR you are allowed to join on your Father or Grandfather?? but in DAR you must re-prove each Step.. Record copies of SAR application that have been approved are usually questioned and not accepted by the DAR? in these later years.. It is still the wiser decision to contact the National Organizations eac.. individually? www.SAR.ORG? for the updated versions. Steve

You do not have to re-prove generations that have already been
documented.  You can just refer to the DAR National number of the person
that you are related to and that will suffice for documentation.  I

It is true that DAR will not accept SAR applications as documentation.

Interesting, my mother, who was a CAR (Children of the American
Revolution) was told that she would have to reprove her CAR
application to become a DAR; even though her mother, aunt, and
grandmother had been members of the DAR and their membership
numbers were on her application. She was upset about that and has
not attempted to join since and at her age may never do so.

Does this vary by state or chapter?

Actually DAR and SAR requirements are NOT THE SAME.  Often time
    in SAR you
are allowed to join on your Father or Grandfather  but in DAR
    you
must re-prove each Step.. Record copies of SAR application that
    have been
approved are usually questioned and not accepted by the DAR  in
    these
later years.. It is still the wiser decision to contact the
    National
    Organizations eac.. individually  www.SAR.ORG

SAR's requirements are the same as DAR except you only have to prove the

bloodline back to the patriot.

Wanda, I don't have handouts, but I normally refer potential members to

the local DAR chapter and give them the excellent DAR web site because

the Society has specific procedures and requirements for membership. I

haven't been asked about SAR membership yet.

Do any of you have handouts with resources that you give to customers

who are trying to get into the DAR or SAR?  Would you please share.

Thanks.

No, this does not vary by state or chapter

I don't know what year she attempted to join.  Perhaps that made a
difference, but that would not be the case now.  Her CAR application,
however, I believe would not be accepted as documentation.  I'd have to
double check that for sure.

The Registrar of the Chapter she wanted to join should have helped her
fill out a DAR application using the National Numbers of any relative
where the generations had been proved as documentation.  Other
generations would have to be documented.

Interesting, my mother, who was a CAR (Children of the American
Revolution) was told that she would have to reprove her CAR application
to become a DAR; even though her mother, aunt, and grandmother had been
members of the DAR and their membership numbers were on her application.
She was upset about that and has not attempted to join since and at her
age may never do so.

Does this vary by state or chapter?

I am a DAR member and have been Registrar
for my chapter, having helped oodles of ladies complete their
applications.  I have also attended a week long, intensive
training
session at DAR on the requirements for completing applications
and conduct
workshops on how to join DAR.

You do not have to re-prove generations
that have already been documented.  You can just refer to the
DAR National
number of the person that you are related to and that will
suffice for
    documentation.  I

It is true that DAR will not accept SAR
