Andi (and anyone else interested in becoming a certified genealogist),

I suggest that you browse the topics in the archives of two Rootsweb lists, "Transitional
Genealogists Forum" (
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/TRANSITIONAL-GENEALOGISTS-FORUM ) and "Association
of Professional Genealogists Mailing List" ( http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/APG ).

On both lists are posts from people who teach classes in some of the genealogy education
programs and people who have attended them. If you have questions about any of the
programs, you are welcome to post them to the TGF and APG listservs.

Many of the posts to TGF, particularly in December 2007 and January 2008, discuss
education and certification. Several Certified Genealogists participate in this list and
contributed to these topics. See, for instance,
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TRANSITIONAL-GENEALOGISTS-FORUM/2007-12/1198013498
and
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TRANSITIONAL-GENEALOGISTS-FORUM/2007-12/1198123606 .

A useful topic on the APG list for November 2007 is "BA in Genealogical Studies at Akamai
University."

You can subscribe to the TGF list at
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/t/transitional-genealogists-foru.html#TRANSITIONAL-GENEALOGISTS-FORUM
and to the APG list at
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Genealogical_Societies/APG.html . You can post on
both lists any questions that you have.

Also browse the APG website ( www.apgen.org ). There you can read, for example, "Becoming
a Professional" ( http://www.apgen.org/articles/ready.html ), "Code of Ethics" (
http://www.apgen.org/ethics/index.html ), and "Hiring a Professional" (
http://www.apgen.org/articles/hire.html ).

Also browse the Board for Certification of Genealogists' website (
http://www.bcgcertification.org ).

Specific programs offered in genealogy education (in addition to BU) include:
-- NGS Home Study Course http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/eduhsc.cfm
-- National Institute on Genealogical Research http://www.rootsweb.com/~natgenin

I have been following the thread on the new BU certificate program and am interested in
advice on or off list. I am interested in pursuing certification in genealogy and wonder
if the BU program is just what I need or other suggestions??

Thank you!
