[Genealib] Re: Genealogy & Ready Reference - who's to blame

In a perfect world, editors and manuscript staff would not be overworked, all organizations and repositories would have unlimited funds and volunteers to notify everyone of every little change and all ready reference would always be 100% up to date. That said, if we all do as much as we can to be sure than any contact changes are broadcast far and wide, and editors make an effort to confirm content between editions, the books will be that much better. Sometimes though, neither seems to occur.

After reading about the Genealogist's Address Book website in a newsletter, I visited and noted a few things I new were out of date for my area. I tried emailing and the email bounced back. If the email is bad, how am I to know that "spending" the time to write a letter and mail it won't bounce as well? Many organizations and repositories don't have unlimited resources to try one contact avenue after another. I'm sure this type of thing seems minor, but these irregularities add up and compound the "problem". I'm not sure there is one solution. My suggestion, if you see out of date listings online or with an email attached - try sending an update. It costs you the time for the email and nothing else.

I believe it is the responsibility of the publisher to check the
information, not the local organizations. This would be in keeping with
the desire to publish an accurate resource.
