I guess I understand your position-but apparently The Handy Book is not
particularly reliable, according to the letters from other librarians.
And if the word gets out that it is not reliable-with multiple persons
reporting that-I am going to be reluctant to keep it on our shelf.

information, not the local organizations. This would be in keeping with
the desire to publish an accurate resource.
Actually I believe it is the responsibility of the author to ensure that
what they are writing about is accurate.
As a publisher, if I fact checked every piece of information in a title
I would average publishing one title every three years.
That said, I believe that it behooves all organizations to be aware of
what is said about them and to act accordingly.
If we remove from our shelves every book that is not accurate and refuse
to purchase a book because it has errors there is not going to be much
on our shelves.
I once used to talk with someone who found fault with every book that
was written about the county where she lived.
It was not until she published her own book that she became quiet on the
subject.
All books have errors. Genealogists accept this premise. Personally the
saying that allows me to sleep best at night is, "If it is in print, it
is wrong." Fortunately, sometimes it is not.
