*Summary:* The library’s special collections play an important role in
preserving a community’s past. Whether that past is related to important
historical events or architecture, the role a key corporation played in
the community’s development, or the records of founding families,
special collections can be a vital link between the library and the
community it serves.

But all special collections are not created equal. The library’s
resources of staff expertise, space for housing the collection, the
financial cost of maintenance, and the library’s overall collection
goals must all be considered each time new items are accessioned.

This workshop taught by a subject and special collections specialists
will give participants the tools they need to appraise new collections
from conception to roll out and may be useful as well in appraising the
continued worth of extant collections.

This workshop is presented by Nancy Down and Stephen H. Paschen. Nancy
has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English Literature from Drew University, New
Jersey. Her M.L.S. is from Indiana University. For the past 16 years she
has worked at Bowling Green State University--originally as a Catalog
Librarian, then as the Popular Culture Reference and Catalog Librarian,
and, most recently, as Head Librarian for the Browne Popular Culture
Library. She has given numerous presentations over the years at
conferences for ALAO, OVGTSL (Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services
Librarians), ACRL, OPAL, SERL, National Popular Culture Association,
Midwest Popular Culture Association, and the Society for the Study of
Midwest Literature.

Stephen earned degrees in Landscape Architecture (B.S.) from Iowa State
University, History (M.A.) from The University of Akron, and Library and
Information Science (M.L.I.S) from Kent State University. He is
currently University Archivist, Assistant Professor in Libraries and
Media Services at Kent State University, where he has also taught an
archives course for the Kent State University School of Library and
Information Science. Mr. Paschen has produced numerous educational
programs, exhibits, and audiovisual productions, as well as preparing
and presenting workshops in collections management, administration, oral
history, and many other facets of museum and archival operations. He is
board treasurer of both the Society of Ohio Archivists and the Ohio
Association of Historical Societies and Museums.
