When we describe the General Pension Index as the Civil War Pension index we
do a diservice to our ancestors who fought in other wars prior to World War
I and civilian retirees of the period.

I am not picking on Tom, but now this is the third group to put up a Civil
War Pension Index on line.

Ancestry.com has put up General Index to Pension Files, 1861 - 1934. This is
NARA publication T288.

Footnote has put up Organizational Index to Pension Files of Veterans Who
Served Between 1861 and 1900. This is NARA publication T289.

Familysearchlabs.org has also put up the Organizatonal Index.

There are differences in the two publications.

The Organizational index does not include the name of the spouse, one key
component of what we know about a soldier. For example, there are four
William F. Scott's in Illinois. Which is mine. I have to consult the
Ancestry version to know that William F. Scott, with wife Melissa J. Scott
is in Company E, 71st Illinois Infantry.

Footnote allows you to see the Organizational Index in the context of the
cards around it. This is a good thing as the value of the Organizatonal
Index is that it is sorted by state, by regiment, by company so that you can
see the comrades of your soldier. This is especially helpful if your soldier
did not apply for a pension, you can look at the pensions of the people who
were around him during the war.

It is a shame that the FamilySearchLabs version did not include a view of
the original card. Original records are good, or so I have been told. <G>

Thought some of you reference types might want to know the differences. Hope
I wasn't wrong.

For those just waiting with bated breath for a new Heritage Books catalog,
it was shipped from Wisconsin (our printer) two days ago.
