I wonder how so many of these colorful stories got started. Maybe
sometimes grandparents or other older relatives make up these tales to
entertain kids, and the stories get accepted later as real family
history... "Grandpa always said that..."

Subject: [Genealib] How I got started
I grew up hearing stories from my paternal grandfather about how his
great, great grandfather came from Germany as a fugitive "hiding in the
mast of a ship" and on my maternal grandmother's side of how we had a
"castle in Ireland". After my mother died I felt it was time to find
out more about our ancestors and to verify the stories. Little did I
know how many family stories contain castaways and castles. We also
bought a computer around that time and once I started researching on the
computer I couldn't stop.
I have been working on my family history for eleven years now...no
castaways or castles have been found.
