Back when my brother & I were sitting around our mother's dinning room
table, when we were both in town, the subject came up if our mother knew who our
father's grandfather, on his father's side, was. Dad had been dead for several
years. She did not know. The question was presented to our father's two
sisters who were elderly and they said they did not know. They did not know any
of that family or where they lived.

The comedian my brother is, he then decided our grandfather was dropped on
somebody's doorstep and took on our surname. He, from that point forward,
claimed to anyone wanting to listen " our grandfather was hatched".

I got our grandfather's death record (he died when I was 2 1/2 and my
brother not born) and it told when and where he was born. That's all a
genealogist needs to get started on a tree!
