We use the software designed by the Halinet consortium in Ontario, Canada. The software allows you to display the index online, or off-line if you prefer. You can limit your entries to just obituaries, marriages, birth announcements etc., or use it to index an entire newspaper. Their approach combines digitization, full text searching, and indexing in an ingenious way. The link to the general Halinet page is http://www.halinet.on.ca/ It can index images and historical archives in addition to newspapers. Halinet consortium has been very generous with their software and support.
You can see our Wilmette Newspaper Index at http://news.wilmette.lib.il.us/
