In my personal experience as an African-American medical librarian with an
avid interest in genealogy, I've found that while there may not be many
African-American specific collections in Footnote, it is still of help. I do
have a personal philosophy though to not focus on the idea of resources
needing to be "African-American" specific; information relevant to our
family trees can be found across all types of resources. I often search many
resources for my African-American roots, for genealogy information on
possible white slave-holding families of my ancestors, and for other
African-American lines and non-African-American lines I've worked on as
well.
I've blogged some about my experience with Footnote on my genealogy blog.
I'd like to refer you to a few of my posts for my anecdotal experiences:
-

and, one of my most interesting experiences was finding a report of the
discovery of Lt. Carroll Napier Langston Jr.'s body. Lt. Langston is a
relative of the black businessman James Carroll Napier of Nashville, TN (
http://www.tnstate.edu/library/digital/napier.htm). Lt. Langston was his
sister's grandson - I blogged about finding that report on a blog I have
dedicated to African-American genealogy in Nashville at
http://blacknashville.wordpress.com/2008/05/10/carroll-napier-langston-jr/
So, I do believe there is plenty of value in Footnote for African-American
research. Just my two cents! I'm happy to discuss more offline if you're
interested!
