For the most part Confederate courts-martials, unlike Union courts-martials
have not survived. Fragments exist in various collections. However, what
does exist are the G.O. [General Orders] and S.O. [Special Orders] that
announced to results of the courts-martial.

An example of such a courts-martial can be found at

http://docsouth.unc.edu/imls/csaarmy/csaarmy.html

Note the components of the citation that are important to the document and
making it unique.

General Orders, No. 12. [G.O. 12]

Petersburg, March 7th, 1864. [place where G.O. was issued]

Before a General Court Martial, Convened at Kinston, North Carolina [place
where courts-martial was held.]

Confederate States of America.

Army. [could have been Navy]

Dept. of North Carolina. [a key piece as this is G.O. 12, Department of N.C.]

General Orders would normally only be issued for General Courts-martials.
This G.O. was only issued to units in the Dept. of North Carolina. General
Orders issued by the Adjutant General and Inspectors Office, CSA could go to
the entire army rather than just a Department.

Special Orders would normally be issued for Special and Summary Courts-
martials.

There is more, but this should get you started. In fewer words, you need to
have the locality of the issuing agency to determine what it really is.
