HISTORICAL COMMISSION ANNOUNCES SALE
The Prince William County Historical Commission has announced a
price reduction in an important local history publication, Prince
William: a Past to Preserve. The latest edition of this title was
published in 1998 by the Commission. Paperbound, 8.5x11 inches, 254
pages, indexed, it contains photos and descriptions of hundreds of
historic structures in Prince William County, as well as Manassas and
Manassas Park. As an inventory reduction measure, the price has been
reduced from $15 to $7. To order a copy visit

other contributions to local history published by the Commission. Their

Here are our latest offerings. Funding for RELIC programs is provided
by the Friends of Central and Bull Run Libraries. Sign language
interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs

THE DARKEST NIGHT:
THE FIGHT AT FAIRFAX COURTHOUSE,
JUNE 1861
Presented by Ted Ballard
As the American Civil War got underway, a skirmish took place
outside the old Fairfax County Courthouse, on June 1, 1861. Historian
Ted Ballard will present an illustrated talk about this little-known but
significant event leading up to the first battle of Manassas. The
story includes a Union cavalry charge, the death of a Confederate
commander, a counter-attack led by a former Virginia governor, and the
award of a Congressional medal of honor.

THE WORLD WARS ON THE HOMEFRONT:
THE WORKBASKET CAMPAIGN
Presented by Karen C. K. Ballard
For over 30 years Karen Ballard has researched and collected vintage
international textile tools and 19th/20th century publications on the
manufacture and embellishment of textiles. She has contributed writings
to the Center for the History of American Needlework Newsletter and has
displayed portions of her extensive collections at Belle Grove
Plantation, the Fairfax Library, and the Loudoun County Museum.
One of her areas of specialization, the focus of this presentation and
its accompanying display, is the World War I and II 'Homefront'
manufacture of primarily knitted and sewn items for our fighting men and
European refugees.
The program will be presented at Bull Run Regional Library on Friday,
July 25 at 11 a.m. Items from her collections will be on display at
Bull Run Library throughout the month of July. To reserve a seat for

MISSED BY THE CENSUS TAKER? TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR ANCESTOR ON U.S.
AND BRITISH ISLES CENSUS RECORDS
Presented by Tish Como
A small percentage of people were missed by census takers. More often
than not, they were included, but are difficult to find. RELIC's Tish
Como will demonstrate advanced search techniques to maximize your census
research results.
