I finally got hold of the person in charge of reporting birth records in the Denton Record-Chronicle and was told that they no longer publish birth announcements for free.
It had become a liability issue for them: they had been receiving incorrect information (from the hospitals) regarding parent names. They came to the conclusion that if people want to have this information in the paper that they would have to do it themselves, which means that they will have to pay for it. Instead of the usual 30-50 birth announcements each month, there are now 2-3.
I didn't ask about the marriages, but I'm going to go with door number 3: price, also.
I guess that partially answers my last question, that genealogy research will become more expensive in the future.
And this will be something to add to our list of "Why can't I find (__) information anymore?"

Our local paper has not recorded births in the paper on a regular basis in
years and I am not sure why. They still report the marriages tho.
It may be privacy isssues but I wanted you to know that your paper is not
the only one doing this. I suspect the only way to find out the reason would
be to phone the newspaper since they probably won't reply by email to this
type of question.

I have noticed in the last 6 months - year, that the number of marriages
recorded in our local paper has declined.
Does this reflect that more people are living together than marrying? Or
could it be a disinterest in reporting it?
The same thing is true with the births, in fact, they have not been reported
in our paper for 3 months. This could be because of a reorganization, but I
am not sure. The births have - for the last several years - shown up in the
Sunday paper.
I am wondering if this could be because of privacy issues? could it be lack
of interest? time? or not enough interest for the paper to place them there.
I have emailed the local paper about the births, but have yet to receive a
reply from them.
And how will this affect future generations of people searching for their
relatives? Does it seem that there is less free information out there?
Any thoughts?
