Take a look at the ScanPro 1000 microfilm viewer/scanner. We have four in
family history, one in ILL and one in cataloging. They are fast, user
friendly, software enhances images, copies, or prints. Software is menu
driven. Does fiche, film, and microcard (add-on). We use the electric drive
models connected to computer with 24 inch monitors which can be turned
portrait or landscape. Software add-on will scan entire roll or X number of
frames automatically. These are small footprint, firewire connection - card
included - patrons love them. We will add more and retire all old technology
as they die. Sold by E-image Data. http://e-imagedata.com/ScanPro_1000.html

The SP 1000s are in public areas. We have Abbyy FineReader OCR software on
one computer in our department for public use. The library has a scanning
department in Special Collections, but so far they use our film scanners
because they do very little film scanning.

Worcester Public Library inplemented an e mail reference servuce a few years
ago and before long we were inundated with requests for obituaries, many-we
suspected-from professional researchers.?Since we began asking for a
"suggested" donation of $5.00 per name, volume has dropped off considerably
and is now at a manageable level.-

I am curious as to what other libraries charge for copying obituaries.? I am
interested in the fees for requests by mail and email that you would receive
at your library.

We have an HP desktop and use a Minolta ST-200 scanner for making copies. It
came with its own scanning software (proprietary) but can save in a JPG,
PNG, and TIFF format. We don't have an OCR software for that machine. What
we use on our digitizing machines is Imageware from a German company
(proprietary). We have to use what comes with the hardware. The scanning is
always done by paid staff.

Much of what we digitize is handwritten so OCR software is not really good
for it at all. And what happens sometimes is that an OCR's index of some
sort comes back with the weirdest results. One puts in "married" and gets a
hit on "harried", but when you look at the actual underlying sentence its
"married"

(In a recent meeting with a local historical society, we were discussing
scanning microfilm and are looking for any advice from small in house
projects. What hardware and software did you use? How accurate is OCR? was
the work done by staff or volunteers?)
