Genealogy and Local History Specialist

Position Description: 

Provides basic instructions to patrons and new staff on how to begin
genealogy research and trace family history. Interacts with library
patrons to assist them in meeting informational needs. Responsible for
the State Regional Historical Records Depository in the Library System.
Coordinates the preservation of documents, maps, photographs and other
documents of the area. Conducts and plans tours, programs, and speeches
for adults concerning areas of specialty. Actively seeks items to add to
the collection based in significance to local history. Attends relevant
conferences and workshops. Establishes good relationships with local
historical societies and genealogical groups. Implements special
projects for enhancing the use of the library's resources, such as
developing indexes and preparing an electronic database of local
obituaries. Assembles and arranges displays and bibliographies. Keeps
statistical records of unit activities and prepares appropriate reports.
Prepares preliminary unit budget; recommends materials and equipment for
selection. Speaks about genealogy and local history at schools,
community groups and professional associations. Supervises staff;
interviews, trains, prepares work schedules and reviews performance of
support staff. Recommends selection of new employees, employee
transfers/promotions, and disciplining/discharging. Participates in
activities and duties related to emergency management during a local
state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

Required Education: 

Master's degree in Library Science.
