[Genealib] Marriages at Ellis Island

The one who would know is Marian Smith, Historian for CIS (formerly INS).
It seems the CIS History page is still not up and running, but her article
on passenger list markings at the jewishgen website is terrific.  See
Detained Aliens especially for info about single women.  Women did not have
to be married.  My grandmother and her 2 sisters were not.

It is my understanding that until there was a federal immigration bureau,
there was little regulation - although some states did have their own
requirements for their ports.
