[Genealib] 1940 census

The following thoughts are my own and do not express the official
position, if any, of the National Archives and Records Administration.

In 1940, the official census day was April 1, 1940. The 1940 census
will be released 72 years after the official census day, i.e., it
will be released on OR after April 1, 2012. Since April 1, 2012 is a
Sunday, it is likely that the earliest release date would be April 2,
2012.

The 1940 census was accessioned on microfilm by the National Archives
(as was 1930, 1920, 1910, 1900).

I am not a member of NARA's 1940 census committee, but I believe
the following is likely to be true: It is likely that the 1940 census
will only be released in digital format. It is not likely that it
will be made available for sale as microfilm.

I am glad to know that the genealogical community is getting anxious
to know more about plans for the 1940 census.

When the National Archives has something to say about the 1940
census, I am sure it will be placed on its website (www.archives.gov/
genealogy).
