I should have included the TCCL Genealogy Center's dedicated volunteers
who help to take care of the library customers and sometimes take on
additional projects, as well. The Genealogy Center may not rely on
volunteers as far as keeping the library open, though. I think that
volunteers do count when trying to have two in the building whenever it
is open, but either the genealogy librarian or one of the library
associates must always be present whenever the Genealogy Center is open.

At the Tulsa City County Library, our Genealogy Collection has been in a
separate, free-standing facility since October 2002. While at first it
was open in the evenings like most of the other 23 branches in the
system, they decided to cut back to Monday - Saturday 10:00 to 5:00 in
September 2005.
Before September, back when they were open 10:00 to 8:00 on Monday -
Thursday and 10:00 - 5:00 on Friday & Saturday, they used three 20-hour
library associates to help cover the schedule, along with the 40-hour
genealogy librarian and a part-time shelver. When they cut back, they
were reduced by one library associate and they gained a part-time clerk.
I am relieved (for the library customers) that they are currently doing
a survey to decide whether to open one or two weekday evenings. On that
day or days, they would change the hours to 1:00 to 8:00 for a total of
42 hours open each week. I think the subsequent staffing changes will
depend upon the results of the survey.

We are starting to plan for a new building. I am thinking of having a
separate genealogy room, but I fear that I can't afford to staff it full
time. Does anyone in library land have a genealogy room that has
different hours than your main library?
