[Genealib] Donated family files

We handle our family file donations in way similar to the way described by
Sandy Day for Schiappa Library. Our bound family histories are cataloged. We
provide a finding aid (in-house and online) that lists the family files
within our archival collections and vertical files. However, the folders
within the vertical files and archival collections are not (yet*)
cataloged--*Our single cataloger is in the process of assigning LOC Subject
Headings for the folders, with the goal of eventually adding them to the
catalog.

John
In our library system we handle it depending on the format. If it is mostly
just pedigree charts and a small no. of pgs it goes into our vertical file.
We have them in alpha order and indexed.
If it is a family history we put it in our family history collection and all

of these are catalogued in alpha order. If they are not already hardbound we

get them bound. We also have an index to these histories by surname. We do
our best to make these easy to find and available to the public.

I am trying to get a handle on how other institutions, especially public
libraries, treat donated family files. Do you file it in a cabinet? Do you
treat it as a manuscript collection and process it as such? Do you create a
MARC record for it?
thanks
