Prince William County Virginia Marriages Database: 1938-1943 (includes
thousands of marriages from other states)
RELIC's (The Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center for Genealogy and Local
History at Bull Run Regional Library in Manassas, VA ) website now
includes an index to the 4,423 marriage licenses issued in Prince
William County, Virginia from 1938-1943. Only 990 of those were granted
to county residents. By December 1938, Washington, D.C., Maryland,
Pennsylvania, New York and the New England states had imposed
restrictions (blood tests and waiting periods between the issuance of a
marriage license and certificate) on instant marriages. Couples seeking
hasty nuptials made their way south and the number of marriages
performed in northern Virginia counties skyrocketed.
Virginia imposed similar restrictions beginning August 1, 1940, and
initially most licenses were issued to county residents. The United
States' entry into World War II, however, spurred another wave of
non-resident marriages in Prince William County as women from all over
the country traveled to Quantico, Virginia to wed their servicemen.
For more information see "Manassas Virginia: An Unproclaimed Gretna
Green" in the July 2007 issue of Reliquary,
www.pwcgov.org/library/relic/reliquary.htm . The article includes a
link to the marriage index. You can go directly to the marriage index
at www.pwcgov.org/library/digitallibrary -- click on VITAL RECORDS and
then on MARRIAGES.
We hope this index will help researchers in DC, MD, PA, NY, NJ, New
England, and beyond find marriage records of interest.
