[Genealib] locking up the microform reader/printer lenses

Elaine - Just catching up on email reading after the NGS conference in Richmond. We put magnetic strips on everything of value - microfilm reader lens, pictures on wall, clocks, etc. - even many of our files - not just our books. Small pieces of a strip will still set off the alarm. We haven't had any major incidents lately, but routinely recover vertical files that accidentally get shuffled amongst patrons' personal genealogical papers.

  Thanks for everyone's input on the Minolta microfilm printer lenses.  I think I will follow the advice of nearly everyone and leave one lens in the machine but lock up (or at least put away) the extra.  If someone actually needs the higher magnification lens we will be there to help them.  We previously had lenses locked up but I always wondered if they really were a high theft item or if we were being unnecessarily cautious.  It seems that accidental breakage is a larger threat.

  We have never had a theft. But because these lenses are costly and 
  somewhat fragile, we keep the extras in their boxes in a drawer and have 
  signs that ask patrons to let us know if they need help and we will 
  remove and insert the other lense. This also keeps them fro accidentally 
  getting knocked to the floor, etc. A number of years ago, we did have a 
  machine and lense damaged by someone who did not know what they were 
  doing trying to force a lens into the machine so it's just better to do 
  it ourselves.
