I cannot think of a better person to start with than George Ryskamp. Among
other things he takes a group of BYU family history students to do research
in Spain on a regular basis. He's as associate professor in the family
history department at BYU.

Hi Chris,

You might begin here:
http://www.cyndislist.com/spain.htm

How Spanish surnames are constructed and indexed is important to know. Use
one of the books on tracing Hispanic ancestors to learn the basics. (A book
I have used is "Finding Your Hispanic Roots" by George R. Ryskamp
http://www.genealogical.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&item_number=505
7 .)

There were three major ethnic groups in historic Spain: Christians, Jews,
and Muslims. Each had a rich history and culture; and several websites deal
with these populations both historically and genealogically. Knowing the
history can be useful.

Good luck with your research.

Does anyone have any idea how to do genealogy in Spain? We didn't
find much on Ancestry.
