CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
These are not 'membership' societies, but recognized certifying bodies. No one says you must be certified or accredited to be known as a 'professional' genealogist. Be sure you know the charges - as well as the re-certifying procedures and costs.
Board for Certification of Genealogists:
http://www.bcgcertification.org/ An independent organization not affiliated with, or part of, any group. Go to the BCG website and take the self-test & read some great articles.
$50 Application Packet -
Categories:
CG - Certified Genealogist
CGRS - Certified Genealogical Records Specialist
CLS - Certified Lineage Specialist
CGL - Certified Genealogical Lecturer
CGI - Certified Genealogical Instructor
The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional
http://www.icapgen.org/ Established in 1964 by Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (LDS) for international accreditation.
Expensive, and time consuming. However, certainly something that one should pursue if possible. There is also the Association for Professional Genealogists that denotes a professional standing. http://apgen.org/publications/
The decision to be certified or accredited, or just 'hanging out your shingle' through membership in the APG depends on just what you hope to accomplish and what you want to do ... take clients, lecture, teach, write, etc..... Several years ago I presented an all-day seminar at Angelina College on "Hanging out your professional shingle." It probably needs a little update, but I'd be happy to share it with anyone who wants a copy (27 pgs) provided you send me a request off list and give me your name, and let me know if you're a librarian and where. and everyone else, let me know where you are located (I like to keep a little tally of where the request come from).

Subject: [Genealib] Certified/Professional Genealogist
Hello,
I am looking for a program in the United States that prepares a person to become a professional genealogist.
I know about the National Institute for Genealogical Studies in Canada.
Thanks,
