Our library has recently started cataloging our genealogy books using
our own cutters based on the ethnic/geographical focus of the book. For
example, the book Finding Italian Roots: The Complete Guide for
Americans by John Phillip Colletta has been assigned the call number
929.1 ITALIAN COL . Many of these ethnic genealogy guides are fairly
straightforward. However, we've recently acquired the book Finding Your
Ancestral Village in Slovakia, Czechy, Ukraine, Galicia and Hungary in
the Former Austro-Hungarian Empire by John A. Hudick. Does anyone have
any advice how to categorize this work? 929.1 SLAVIC HUD? Or 929.1
AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN HUD? Or 929.1 EASTERN EUROPEAN HUD? Do other
libraries employ this kind of system to assist patrons browsing the
shelves? If so, what designations to you use?
Thanks!
