[Genealib] RE: Microfilm Policies

Jack,

Each of our 9 microfilm reader/printers are connected to their own
printers. We charge 15 cents per page to print, using a SmartCard
system. Three of those machines are also connected to computers and
patrons are able to scan microfilm images from those machines.

Most of the patrons who use the scanning feature download the images
onto a portable "jump" drive and then edit them at home. We don't allow
editing of images in the library because it can be time-intensive and we
really don't have editing software to speak of.

We do not charge for scanning images. Technically I believe it would be
possible to email the scanned images from the computers, but I have not
seen anyone do it yet. But again, I don't think we would charge if
anyone did.

Hello, all-
I'm looking into adding a microfilm scanner to our reading room, and I'm

wondering what policies other libraries follow. For those of you with a
microfilm scanner for public use, I'm wondering
1.) Do you allow patrons to email the images?
2.) Do you charge for scanning from microfilm?

If any of you have policies for using a microfilm scanner, I'd be
interested to read them. Thanks-
Jack Simpson

We allow the public to scan and email and only charge if they want to
print a paper copy.

There is a nice article about Winnie Walsh who has retired from the
Spartanburg (SC) County Library.
Among her many accomplishments she is responsible for organizing the
effort
to index the obituaries in the Spartanburg Herald and sister
publications
from the area. She personally indexed every obituary in the area
newspapers
back to 1950. The obituary indexing project is now back to the 1800s.
Her
career and accomplishments are recorded in an article in today's
Spartanburg
Herald. See:

Fortune magazine writer John Simons has an interesting article about DNA
and researching African-American genealogy.
