   I finally discovered what I did. Without going into gory details, 
there are two indexes to the 1890 Wisconsin veterans schedule on ALE; 
one gives images, one does not. Using the spelling I was given for the 
veteran in question, I got led to the "does not" index. Using what I 
consider to be the (different) spelling which best matches the 
hand-writing on the enumeration, one gets led to the other index.
