[Genealib] Storing high resolution digital files

Hi Karen,
Have you considered an online storage service such as xdrive or flickr? For a modest annual fee of $25 I've started uploading all my personal TIFF files to Flickr (www.flickr.com). You can set various levels of access to the photos - only viewable by you, your friends or everyone. You can tag and label photos as you wish, group the photos by "sets," etc. There's even a licensing option.
As a personal aside, in the short time that I've had my own genealogy images on Flickr I've already been contacted by distant relatives - one in Australia! - who found the picture or document of our common ancestor online. I mainly put the images up there to save room on my hard drive, but I hadn't anticipated the research benefits! I'm still uploading the files and have barely started tagging and labeling, but to get the general idea, visit http://www.flickr.com/photos/klnsmith. It's a great way to share with friends and family, connect with other researchers, and have a backup.
You can create a free account, but as you would expect there are limitations on the free account on the number of photos you can upload.

Our library is a participant in a cooperative online
database called Digital Past. The participants scan
and catalog photographs and documents that previously
were only available onsite. The server housing the
database can only accomodate low resolution images
suitable for viewing online. The high resolution
archival images are the responsibility of each library
to handle on their own. The files are taking up a lot
of space on our library's server...way too much space
I've been told. I've tried burning CDs, then DVDs,
but the process is tedious and sometimes unreliable.
I want to be archivally responsible and maintain the
high resolution files if I can. What do other
institutions do with their archival digital TIFFs?
